Little Foretastes

Little foretastes

From round wreaths symbolizing a never-ending circle of life, to candles lit representing an eternal flame burning forever, to evergreen trees foreshadowing life eternal, these little symbols are all markers of our life beyond the here and now.

And let’s not forget the chocolate fudge, pecan pies, juicy turkey, and maybe even some figgy pudding spread across our Christmas tables. And then there’s gifts. Given by moms and dads, spouses, siblings, friends, and neighbors. Gifts given in love, symbolizing sacrifice and great effort the giver spent to showcase their care and love for the recipient.

These are all foretastes. All sweet comforts we relish and savor once a year.

In the words of John Piper, “And foretastes are good. Unless they become substitutes. Oh, don’t let all the sweet things of this season become substitutes of the final, great, all-satisfying Sweetness. Let every loss and every delight send your hearts a-homing after heaven.”

May we savor all the sweet moments and may they point our hearts heavenwards, sending praises of thanksgiving and seeking the sweetest gift of all—the gift of our Savior, Jesus.
