Homecoming

Why does coming home feel so good?

Could it be that we’re returning to a familiar place of comfort? Where we are loved and accepted?

Perhaps we have fond memories there?

Perhaps a certain family member, a spouse, parent, grandparent, or sibling are actually where “home” feels.

Either way, the warm rush of joy in your chest at stepping through the door or into the arms of another can hardly be matched by anything better.

These homecomings are foretastes of heaven.

As John Piper says, “I have family coming home for the holidays. It feels good. I think the bottom-line reason for why it feels good is that they and I are destined in the depths of our being for an ultimate Homecoming. All other homecomings are foretastes. And foretastes are good.”

Of course, not everyone can associate homecoming with joy and fondness, and for those of you whose home is not a place of comfort and joy, you still have hope for a future home that will be even more wonderful than any we can imagine here.

May we soak in the warm joy of coming home, whether that be to a place or into the arms of a loved one, and praise our Savior for the sweet gift of heavenly foretastes.
